You reap what you soil

When I was young, my parents told me to treasure what I have, because their effort doesn’t come easily. My grandparents came at a poor family. Before my grandfather came to Hong Kong, he lived with his eight brothers and sisters in a filthy room. As he was the eldest brother, he took care his brothers and sisters and did the chores every day. Moreover, he helped his parents to take care the stalls that they had. He was tired and felt exhausting.

Growing up, my grandfather learned to create his own business. He worked in a clothes shop for three years and learned how to manage a store. It provided a lot of experience for him and prepared for his own business. Three year later, my grandfather opened a clothing store with his friend and stated his retail business. As they were still fresh to the market, they had a hard time. They went to different countries to visit garment factories and made sure their qualities are satisfied. It is tough for them, however, they faced the challenges and didn’t complaint to their works. After several years, they had a good reputation for their store and got success in their business. One day, my grandfather met my grandma and they fell in love. After my father was born, they decided to move to Hong Kong. They gave up everything in China and brought a store and a house in Hong Kong. Nevertheless, they had to start over their business. Because of the experience and struggles through years, they finally got success.

The story changes my value. It makes me understand that everything comes with a price. There's no free lunch in the world. If you want to get success, you have to spend your time on it and work hard.

Andy Warhol's art work

Art Work:
1.      Marilyn Monroe – 1964
Material: Silkscreen and oil on canvas
The art work is to pay tribute to Marilyn Monroe. It created a “collage” style to present the portrait of Marilyn Monroe. It uses a many wild and bright colours to illustrate the work.

2.        Campbell's Soup Can – 1962
Material: Silkscreen on canvas
Size: 35 3/4 x 24
The art work was created during the early Pop art movement. The whole picture is all Campbell’s Soup Cans. Campbell’s soup can was popular during the 80s and 90s. Andy Warhol decided the paint it because the soup can is significant for him. He drank it every day in the morning and it became part of his daily life.

3.      The sixteen Jackies – 1964
Material: Acrylic and silkscreen on canvas
Size: 80 x 64 in
There’re faces of four kids in the pictures. Their faces keep repeating on rows Andy Warhol chose their faces because they appeared ubiquitously in the media after the assassination.

I choose Andy Warhol because I like his art works and ideas. He likes to create works that near to his life. That remind me that art can be everywhere in our life. For example: your teacher’s faces, the tree behind your house or even a poster that you see every day. If you pay a little bit attention, life can be funny and more interesting. Moreover, he is talented at using colours. For exmaple: the Marilyn Monroe is merged of successive intense colours. However, it is successful and looks suitable.

Andy Warhol's profile

Artist Name: Andy Warhol
Style: Pop art
Life history:
Andy Warhol is an American artist and film maker. He is talented and very popular in the second half of the twenties century. His art works including drawing, painting, prints and videography.
When he was in college, he discovered the blotted-line technique. It was to tape two pieces of blank paper together and then draw in ink on one page. Before the ink dried, press the two pieces of paper together. Finally a picture with irregular lines comes out, and color in with watercolor. Andy Warhol didn’t like to study, he always missed classed. He only interested in art. He took arts at school and Carnegie Museum.
Before he became an artist, he was a commercial illustrator. He worked to explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement. After that, he acted as a leader of the visual art movement. He also discovered the process of silk screening. This technique uses a specially prepared section of silk as a stencil, allowing one silk-screen to create similar patterns multiple times.
Moreover, Andy was a gay man and he lived openly even before the gay liberation.

The Mysterious Place

In a piece of island, there’s a jungle. The island is on the sea and people rarely know it. There is an old witch who lives thousand years on the island. She knows how to use black magic and do the curses. She grows a lot of trees, plants and animals that now extinct in the world. Most of the plants can use for cure. They are grotesque in shape and smell disgusting. There’re some rectangular flowers and trees and triangle shape of grass. Moreover, there’re several kinds of animals. Some of the animals looked weird and ridiculous. For example, there’re unicorns, panda ants, mermaids in the jungle. Additionally, the blood of unicorn is precious, it can use for cure cancer. Many years ago, some intruders found the jungle. They wanted to catch the unicorns and cut the trees. They are greedy and barbarian businessmen who wanted to sell the unicorns in good price. They killed a lot of unicorns in the jungle during mid-night. The old witch saw the corpse of unicorns and she was angry. She killed the men the night after and made a curse to them. The curse is the next generation of those men can never have children. Those businessmen disappeared from the world, and no one knows where they were.
From that day, the witch made a curse to protect the jungle. There’re clouds on the sky of the jungle that have protection. The old witch never came out from the jungle. She lives with the animals and studies the black magic in the jungle in her whole life.

Personal symbolic

Friends play an important role in my life. Especially some close friend, they’re my strength. They help me when I meet troubles. We play, smile and cry together. We grow up and look after each other. I love them so much. One thing that has special symbolic meaning for me is a letter my best friend gave me. She name is Rosa. As Rosa knew that I’ll go to study in Canada, she wrote a letter to me. I have known her for 5 years and we have been in a same class for 4 years. I used to go to school with she, it’s so hard to go to school on my own. She gave me the letter before the flight. We hugged and cried in the airport. We don’t want to leave each other. The letter is meaningful because it included her love and our friendship. Because of the busy of school and time different, we can’t always talk on phone and share our life. However, I feel so warm when I read the letter again and look at photos of us. When I miss her and meet troubles, I will read the letter. It gives my power and faith to believe that I can do better. She is always my encouragement.
I promise her to get into a good university in Canada, go back to Hong Kong and find her. When I get married, I will invite her to my wedding and be my maid of honour. Although it’s only a letter, it’s much more expensive that any jewelry or rings to me. It symbolic our friendship and you can’t buy it with money. We grew up together and went through a lot of troubles. It’s part of my precious memory and I will always keep it in heart.

The Ultimate All-Purpose Excuse

Good morning, Ms Ngan, I’m so sorry! I’m late because I got something to do this morning. My mother was sent to the hospital last night because she got a high fever. It happened accidentally and I’m shocked. My mother is always health and seldom gets sick. Last night, she came to my bedroom suddenly and told me that she’s so sick and needed to go to hospital. She was weak and tired. She was unconscious and kept overthrowing during the whole night. She couldn’t eat or get the water on her own easily, so I stayed with her in the hospital until the morning. I tried to comfort her, took care of her to make her feel better. She couldn’t fall in sleep at night so I told her some stories.
I helped her to get the water and take the food. I’m so worry about her and I couldn’t leave her alone in the hospital. I love my mother so much and it is my responsibility to take care her. My dear Ms Ngan, please forgive me to come late this morning. I promise that I will do the homework and hand in it on time from now. I will never be late to school again. Please!!

The story in my names

Names play as an important role in our life. It helps people to distinguish everyone. A name may change someone’s first impression on you. They might guess your gender, appearance or even personality through your name. In Chinese ’Feng Shway’, name even affect a person’s whole life. However, I don’t the Chinese name that my grandparents chose for me when I was young.
My Chinese name is Zhou Xinci. The word ‘ Xin ’ means happiness, and ‘ ci ’ means kindness. They wanted me to have joy in my life and be nice to everyone. It’s seems lovely and special. Nevertheless, my name sounds similar to the name of a famous comedian – Stephen Chow ( Zhou Xinchi ). My classmates used to make fun of my name and it really distressed me. Everyone who came to me just asked me if I was his relatives in a joking way and told their friend about it. It’s embarrassed and I didn’t how to respond. Finally, the teasing and making fun of my name stopped when I got into high school. People become more mature and stopped acting like a children. Growing up, I realized the reasons and the symbolic that behind my name. It has a beautiful meaning behind it. I wish I could be happy everyday and be a friendly guy who everyone likes. I began to accept and like my name. It included the love of my grandparents and I should treasure it.
My English name is Jessica and I chose this name by myself. It means rich and God beholds. There is also a wealthy landlord’s daughter called Jessica. I like the meaning of this name, it’s always my goal and the name sounds beautiful and simple. It helps people to memorize and remember me. Though I like both of my Chinese and English names, my English name bring me more convenience in my life.

In short, although I was once hated my Chinese name, I’m relieved now because I know it’s a precious gift from my grandparents. Additionally, a name follows the person until he died. We should choice the name seriously as it could affect his life.
